1671Battle of Saraighat — Ahom forces under Lachit Borphukan defeated the Mughal forces.
1769Beginning of the Moamoria Rebellion, which significantly weakened the Ahom kingdom.
1817First Burmese invasion of Assam.
1821Burmese occupation of Assam became substantially complete.
1826Treaty of Yandabo signed on 24 February; Burmese claims over Assam ended and British political control began.
1828Gomdhar Konwar’s revolt against British rule.
1830Piyali Phukan and other anti-British conspirators were punished; Piyali Phukan was executed.
1837Bengali introduced as the language of administration/education in Assam under British rule.
1839Assam Company established, marking an important stage in the commercial development of Assam tea.
1846First issue of Orunodoi (Arunodoi), the pioneering Assamese periodical, published from Sivasagar.

Mahatma Gandhi visited Assam during the Non-Cooperation Movement

Assam became a Governor’s Province.

Muhammad Saadulla headed a ministry in Assam.

1940Assam State Museum established in Guwahati.
1942

Quit India Movement in Assam

Kanaklata Barua and Mukunda Kakoti were killed while attempting to hoist the national flag at Gohpur police station.

1943Freedom fighter Kushal Konwar executed by the British.
1946Gopinath Bordoloi became Premier of Assam again; crucial period of opposition to the Cabinet Mission’s Grouping Plan.
1947

India became independent

Most of Sylhet became part of East Pakistan following the referendum

Assam Medical College established at Dibrugarh.

1948Gauhati University established.
1950Assam Earthquake of 1950 (Assam–Tibet earthquake), one of the strongest recorded earthquakes in the region.
1955Gauhati High Court came into existence in its present institutional lineage as the High Court of Assam.
1960Assam Official Language Act, 1960 enacted, providing for Assamese as the official language of the state subject to statutory provisions/exceptions.
1962Sino-Indian War; NEFA became a major theatre of the conflict.
1963Nagaland became a separate State, carved out from Assam.
1965Dibrugarh University established.
1967All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) established in its present form.
1969Assam Agricultural University established at Jorhat.
1972Meghalaya became a full-fledged State; major territorial and administrative reorganisation of Northeast India.
1973Capital of Assam shifted from Shillong to Dispur following Meghalaya’s formation.
1979Beginning of the Assam Movement/Assam Agitation, centred on the foreigners issue.
1985Assam Accord signed on 15 August 1985, bringing the six-year Assam Movement to an end; Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) subsequently came to power.
