Multiple skill development initiatives were launched on 8th September 2023 during the inauguration of training centres in Guwahati under the Assam Skill Development Mission.
Objective of Assam Skill Development Initiatives
To make youth employable and create self-employment opportunities in Assam.
To bridge skill gaps by providing short-term, industry-relevant skill training.
To promote and preserve indigenous trades and traditional crafts of Assam.
To prepare youth for Industry 4.0 technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), and Augmented Reality (AR).
To facilitate placement-linked skill training ensuring employment to at least 80% of trained youth.
Features of Assam Skill Development Initiatives
Training Centres: 60 centres set up across Assam to train 5,750 youth in 59 vocations.
Placement Linked Skill Development Training Program (PLSDTP): State-funded program targeting skill development with assured employment.
Skill Yatra: A mobile awareness campaign using skill vans launched initially in four districts (Kamrup, Nalbari, Darrang, Morigaon) to promote skill awareness among youth and parents.
Indigenous Skill Training by Gurus: Focuses on preserving traditional skills like mask making, bell and brass metal crafts; initially covering 15 districts with 10 candidates selected from each.
Collaboration with Tata Technologies: Training for 2 lakh youth in cutting-edge technologies (AI, ML, etc.) to align with Industry 4.0 demands.
Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT): Stipends released to trainees under Jal Jeevan Mission and Assam Skill Development Mission.
Industry-Integrated Training: Partnerships with industries (e.g., Schwing Stetter training for concrete pump operator) to ensure job readiness.
Empanelment of Training Providers: Over 150 training providers with 350+ centers covering 33 sectors under ASDM.
Implementation of National Schemes: PMKVY 2.0 & 3.0, National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS), and others integrated into state efforts.
Assam Skill University: A Rs 1,000 crore project expected to be fully functional by 2025, aimed at upskilling 10,000 youth annually with multidisciplinary skill training.
Beneficiaries of Assam Skill Development Initiatives
Unemployed youth of Assam, including graduates, ITI and Polytechnic pass-outs, diploma holders, and professional degree holders.
Youth from both rural and urban areas across all districts of Assam.
Students of government schools (Classes IX to XII) targeted through awareness and counseling programs.
Candidates interested in traditional indigenous trades as well as modern technical fields.
Youth seeking employment within Assam and other states of India.
ITI students and apprentices under NAPS.
Trainees in emerging technologies and vocational courses aiming for Industry 4.0 readiness
