Lapse of Paramountcy
The Indian Independence Act, 1947 declared the Lapse of the Paramountcy (Suzerainty) of the British Crown over the Indian Princely States under Section 7(1)(b).
End of British Suzerainty
Termination of Crown’s Authority
- From the Appointed Day (15 August 1947), the Suzerainty of His Majesty over the Indian States came to an end.
Consequences
With the lapse of paramountcy:
- All Treaties and Agreements between the British Crown and the Princely States automatically ceased to operate.
- Every Obligation, Responsibility, and Commitment of the British Crown towards the Indian States came to an end.
- All Powers, Rights, Authority, and Jurisdiction previously exercised by the British Crown over the Princely States also lapsed.
Legal Effect
Independence of Princely States
- Following the Lapse of Paramountcy, the Princely States were no longer under British Control.
- They became Legally Independent, with the option to decide their future political status by:
- Acceding to India
- Acceding to Pakistan
- (In theory) Remaining Independent, subject to political realities.
Accession to the Dominion of India
Integration of Princely States
- Out of the 565 Princely States situated within the geographical boundaries of the Dominion of India, the overwhelming majority Acceded to India before or on 15 August 1947.

The following important Princely States acceded to the Dominion of India by 15 August 1947:
- Hyderabad
- Jammu & Kashmir
- Bahawalpur
- Junagadh
North-West Frontier States
The following frontier states also acceded before the appointed day:
- Chitral
- Phulra
- Dir
- Swat
- Amb
Historical Significance
End of British Political Control
- The Lapse of Paramountcy marked the Complete End of British Political Supremacy over the Princely States.
Beginning of Political Integration
- It laid the Constitutional and Political Foundation for the Integration of the Princely States into the Union of India, a process led primarily by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and V. P. Menon.
